We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Futures Options Investment Platforms.
Futures options are contracts which afford investors the right to buy or sell shares in the future, and at a pre-defined price, until the expiry date or when the position of the stockholder is closed ahead of the expiration.
Although futures and options are two separate financial products, they are similar in nature, helping investors hedge their current investment or make money from it. Both products allow for buying an investment on a specific date and at a specific price.
In this article, titled 'Futures Options', we will take a closer look at the two products and discuss the differences between them.
With an options contract, an investor gets the opportunity to buy or sell an asset at a pre-defined price during their contract period. They are not under obligation to buy or sell though.
In technical terms, an option is a derivative investment in which a buyer or seller does not own the underlying asset until the contract is finalised. They are based on the value of the asset, and buyers pay a premium reflecting 100 shares which is usually the same as the strike price of the asset.
The contract comes with an expiration date and beyond this date the contract cannot be used either by the buyer or the seller.
There are two types of options - call options and put options. The first is an offer to purchase at the strike price within the contract period while the second is an offer to sell at a pre-defined price.
Futures are contracts in which a buyer or seller needs to buy or sell an underlying asset before the expiration date and at a pre-defined price. They are primarily used to hedge an investment in oil, corn and other commodities.
Let us understand with an example. A farmer is looking to lock the price of their produce upfront, worrying that market prices may fall after harvesting. Similarly, a buyer of the farm produce looks to lock the price upfront, fearing that prices may soar by the time the crop is ready to be delivered. Both move into a futures contract. If the price increases, the buyer benefits. If the price drops, the farmer benefits.
Futures are for institutional buyers who look to take possession of products and are less affected by their price vulnerability in the market. These prices are established in advance and protect both buyers and sellers from price swings.
However, retail buyers move into such contracts in order to bet on the direction of asset prices. They make money if the price moves in a favourable position. If their price prediction is incorrect, they incur a loss. In this case they do not intend to take ownership of the products.
Options are complex and tend to be a riskier investment choice. Buying options leads to the liability of having to pay a premium when the contract is purchased in both call and put options. The liability for sellers is seen more with put options. If a buyer enjoys the right to sell at $50 per share and the price drops to $10, the person who made the contract needs to buy as per the price mentioned.
A futures contract is risky for individual investors as it involves maximum liability for the buyer as well as the seller. Both parties agree to deposit more money to fulfil their daily obligation. The gains here are marked to market daily. This means that the value of their positions is transferred every day to the futures accounts.
Futures and options are risky financial instruments. Both are based on price predictions. If predictions turn out to be true, the investor gains and makes money. If the prediction turns out to be incorrect, one suffers a loss.
In this article, titled 'Futures Options', we have discussed the ins and outs of both types of contract and how institutional investors benefit by protecting themselves from price swings. Both instruments are equipped with specific price deals and expiration dates. A deal ends after the expiration date or if it is finalised within the specific set period.
