The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index is abbreviated as FTSE stock. It is also commonly called FTSE 100, FTSE 100 Index or simply FTSE. Sometimes it is informally addressed as Footsie. The share index is equipped with 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange with respect to market capitalisation. The FTSE maintains the FTSE Stock Index. It is a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
Established in January 1984, the FTSE 100 replaced the price-weighted FT30 Index. It is a market capitalisation-weighted index. Its total market value is the multiplication of the share price of each stock with the total number of issued shares. Many companies listed in the index are international, and this is why it is usually said to weekly indicate the performance of the United Kingdom economy.
The question arises how to know if the UK economy is performing. The FTSE 250 Index is a better indication. It is mainly equipped with domestic companies and a significantly smaller proportion of international ones. However, the FTSE 100 Index is widely used. It is even more used than the FTSE 350 Index, FTSE SmallCap Index, FTSE Fledgling Index and FTSE All-Share, which aggregate the FTSE SmallCap, FTSE 250 and FTSE 100.
The companies need to meet specific requirements set by the FTSE Group, such as having a complete listing on the LSE with either euro or sterling dominated price on the electronic trading service and meeting some tests on liquidity, free float and nationality.
Do you know about the London Stock Exchange (LSE)? LSE is the main exchange of the United Kingdom. An index that provides valuable insights about the movement, returns, and the general trend of the LSE is known as FTSE. The FTSE has the ability to reveal the overall direction of the UK shares market since it contains the top public companies of the UK.
Among the companies listed on the LSE and are also a part of the FTSE, some pay dividends. When the companies from the FTSE index increase their rate of dividends, the dividend yield of the FTSE index increases. But when the companies from the FTSE index lower their dividend rate or do not pay any dividend at all, the FTSE dividend yield drops.
For companies to increase their dividend yield or lower it depends on their performance, earnings, and the decision by the management. If a UK company makes lower-than-expected earnings in a financial year, then they will have less money to share with the shareholders. Similarly, when a company makes more money, it will have more money to share with the shareholders. Some companies actually have a history of paying no dividends despite good earnings growth. The reason behind not paying any dividend is simple - These companies usually invest all of their earnings back into the company, thus increasing the company and thus increasing its revenue as well. For shareholders, they get to benefit from investing in such companies as well - The capital gain return from these companies is usually higher, which makes up for no dividend payments.
If we look at the year, it is estimated that the FTSE 100 index will give a dividend yield of 3.9% in 2025. This is a slight increase compared to the previous years, showing a steady post-pandemic recovery. The total amount of dividend payments is forecasted to be about 80.1 billion in 2025, compared to 76.9 billion in the previous year. By comparing these figures, it becomes apparent that dividend payments are gradually climbing back toward pre-pandemic levels, although not yet reaching the 2018 peak of 85.2 billion.
Post-pandemic recovery continues to drive dividend increases, with 2026 estimates suggesting another 3.5% growth, adding approximately 2.8 billion to total payments. However, the ongoing challenges of inflation and global market uncertainties prevent a rapid return to the peak levels seen in 2018. Many analysts predict that the UK economy will need several more years to fully recover and sustain higher profit levels across industries.
Additionally, a growing trend is observed where large UK companies are leaving the FTSE for American indexes like the S&P 500, seeking higher valuations and broader investor bases. This migration impacts the FTSE's overall market composition and could affect long-term dividend yield trends.
Investing in high dividend yield stocks remains a popular strategy for long-term investors. However, it is important to consider the context of the UK's ever-changing economic environment. Historical performance is not a guarantee of future returns, and careful evaluation is required.
For UK firms, maintaining high dividend payouts can sometimes become a financial strain. Allocating profits toward dividends may limit opportunities for reinvestment or expansion. In some cases, a high yield could signal desperation to retain investor confidence, which can be a warning sign for potential trouble ahead. Investors must weigh these factors carefully when making decisions.
