FTSE All Share is an index of around 600 companies. From a total of more than 2000 listed companies, only around 600 are part of this index. In terms of capitalization, FTSE All Share is considered an important index of the London Stock Exchange. A rising index means that businesses in the UK are growing & vice versa for a falling index.
This index is a combination of around two big indexes (FTSE 100 & FTSE 250). Since it is 2 indices combined into a single one, this index represents a major portion of the London Stock Exchange. To be more precise, this index represents around 98% of market capitalization. So it is a good gauge to check the health of LSE.
With rising COVID cases and talks of possible lockdowns, we will look at the next direction of the UK stock market in the year 2024.
The period between 2018 and 2019 was a hectic time for the index. In the start, the index took a dive to the bottom. Then it took a u-turn and made a new high around 4318. From there, the index started going down once again and eventually closed the year around 3675. Despite making an attempt to reach new highs, the index still closed with a loss of -10% for the year 2018.
The year 2019 was not so bad as compared to 2018. The index actually recovered and closed with a 14% gain at the year-end. Unfortunately, that positive sentiment could not be carried into the next year.
In 2020, a sharp decline in FTSE All Share index wiped out a lot of money. In March 2020, the index was down with a loss of -36%. From there, a strong recovery took place but it was not enough to close the year on a positive note. Despite a strong comeback from the low of 2837, the index still closed the year 2020 with a loss of 10% approximately.
So to sum it up, Year 2018 (down),Year 2019 (Up) and Year 2020 (down).
Last 3 years data shows that the overall direction of the market is indecisive. Will this confusion continue into 2024? Let's take a look ourselves and find out.
The daily chart of FTSE All Share shows that a bearish trendline is capping the price down since 2018. So far, two attempts to break above the bearish trendline failed. Its been 3 years now and the trendline is yet to be broken. Any meaningful move in this index requires a successful break & follow-through of this trendline.
There is another chart pattern at play here though A symmetrical triangle. Since we already had a break above this triangle in November 2020, this means a bullish trend is at play here.
If we measure the Take profit target of the symmetrical triangle, it is around 4400 level. This means that there is a strong chance that the price will break above that bearish trendline too that is keeping the index down for 3 years.
So our first target for FTSE All Share is 4400.
To take a look further, we used Fibonacci retracement with coordinate #1 (4267.85) & coordinate #2 (2690.86). The retracement tool was drawn on the most recent downtrend.
Using this tool, we can take a look at the next possible targets beyond the 4400 level.
Our 2nd target is the 4696 - 4700 region. (127.2% level)
Our 3rd target is the 4900 - 4920 region. (141.4% level)
Our 4th target is the 5200 - 5242 region. (161.8 % level)
Our 5th target is the 5800 - 5844 region. (200% level)
Only after a successful break above a level will target the next forecast level.
Now let's take a look at some of the possible bearish targets...
If the bearish trendline prevents the index from going high once again, we may not reach our first target at all. If that happens, the first bearish target would be 3930. The next important bearish target would be 3660 - 3665 (61.8% level). After that, the next target would be 3479 (50% level) which is strong support.
All these levels are strong supports if the Index goes down. So there is a strong possibility that in case of bearish pressure, the index could bounce back from one of these levels & target our bullish levels once again.
Our FTSE All Share prediction is biased towards the upside. To get some more confirmation, let's adopt an indirect approach to see the next possible moves for this index.
As mentioned earlier, this index is a combination of FTSE 100 and FTSE 250. So if we look at the FTSE 100 chart, we can see it is also in an uptrend and has a target of 7500 at least.
The bullish targets given above are based on technical analysis. To see the complete picture, one also needs to take a look at real-life events that could affect the UK stock market.
