When making money in the FX markets, the two most popular investment strategies are Forex and options trading. There is a reason why; they have been successful for so many investors because of one simple fact; they work. But they also have an Achilles heel; your risk and reward profile in these investments are very high.
The best way to make money in Forex markets is to trade currency options. Here you make money by either buying a call option or a put option. A call option is when you purchase a particular currency and set the expiration date at a price above what you paid for it. If the price increases after you bought it, meaning the strike price, you make money. On the other hand, if the price decreases on the same day you sold it, meaning the expiration date, you lose money. As a result this type of trading is considered high risk.
Forex trading involves a lot of speculation. For example, if you discover that Euro is weak against the USD, you may open a EUR/USD currency options trade. The same applies to spot price movements in various currencies. You would pay for a call option when you think that the Euro will lose value in the next two hours, while you could pay for a put option when you think that the Euro will appreciate in the next two hours.

When I compare Forex and options trading, I see two different approaches to leveraged market exposure. Forex involves trading currency pairs such as GBP/USD or EUR/USD, while options let you buy or sell on a price you previously agreed on. Both can produce significant gains or losses, but the way the risk is calculated is very different.
| Feature | Forex Trading | Options Trading |
|---|---|---|
| Example starting capital | £1,000 | £1,000 |
| What I trade | Currency pairs such as GBP/USD, EUR/USD and USD/JPY. | Contracts linked to shares, indices, currencies or other underlying assets. |
| Main price drivers | Interest rates, inflation, central banks, economic data and geopolitical events. | The underlying asset price, volatility, strike price and time remaining until expiry. |
| Example leverage | At 30:1 leverage, £1,000 of margin could control around £30,000 of Forex exposure. | A £1,000 option premium can provide exposure to an underlying position worth considerably more than £1,000. |
| Forex profit example | A 1% favourable move on £30,000 of exposure could produce approximately £300 before costs. | Not applicable because option returns depend on the premium, strike, expiry and movement of the underlying asset. |
| Option profit example | Forex profit or loss generally follows the size and direction of the currency movement. | If I paid £500 for a call option and its value increased to £750, my position would gain £250, or 50%, before costs. |
| Loss example | A 1% adverse move on £30,000 exposure could mean approximately a £300 loss. | If I paid a £500 premium for an option that expired worthless, I would lose the entire £500 premium. |
| Maximum loss | Leveraged losses can consume margin quickly, although protections depend on the broker and jurisdiction. | For a buyer of a standard option, my maximum loss is generally the premium paid. Selling certain uncovered options can expose me to much larger, and in some cases theoretically unlimited, losses. |
| Time risk | A Forex position does not normally have a fixed expiry, although overnight financing can accumulate. | Options expire, so the position can lose value as time passes even when the underlying market barely moves. |
| Volatility risk | Unexpected currency volatility can quickly increase leveraged losses. | Changes in implied volatility can alter an option's value even without a large move in the underlying asset. |
| Trading costs | Spreads, commissions and overnight financing may apply. | Premiums, spreads, commissions and other contract or exchange charges may apply. |
| Main risk I watch | Using excessive leverage because normal currency movements appear small. | Losing the premium through an adverse price move, falling volatility or simply running out of time. |
| Overall risk | High when leveraged. Small currency movements can create substantial percentage losses. | High and more complex. Risk depends heavily on whether I am buying or selling options and on the strategy used. |
If I used £1,000 as margin with 30:1 leverage, I could control around £30,000 of Forex exposure. A 0.5% adverse move would represent approximately £150, while a 1% move would mean about £300. This is why I pay close attention to leverage rather than assuming a small currency movement means a small financial risk.
If I paid a £500 premium for a call option, the most I would generally lose as the buyer is that £500 premium. If the option increased in value to £800, I could make £300 before costs. However, if it expired worthless, I would lose 100% of the £500 invested. Selling uncovered options can carry substantially greater risk than simply buying them.
For me, Forex is easier to understand in terms of direct price movement, but leverage can magnify losses quickly. Options give me more ways to structure a trade, but I also need to consider expiry dates, strike prices, premiums, implied volatility and time decay. I therefore see options as more complex, while both products can be high risk when significant leverage or exposure is involved.

For many traders, one of the biggest decisions they must make regarding Forex trading is whether or not they should trade in pairs like the USD/JPY, EUR/USD/CHF. Forex CFDs are high risk leveraged trades and you must understand the high level or risk involved before trading them. With a Forex CFD you do not own any underlying currency assets. You are purely speculating on the Forex pair price movement up or down. The CFD trade is between you and the broker purely on the price movement. As CFD trades use leverage you are basically borrowing money from your Forex CFD broker. If the trade does not go in your favour you may end up owing more than your deposited amount.
Whether you decide to trade real Forex currencies or trade in Forex CFDs you must know what you are doing and have a risk management plan.
