Female investors are, more often than not, less seen in the realm of investing as compared to male investors. Many have speculated that this could be caused by a gap in the investment knowledge of females. A common reason why women are not into the investing avenue could be due to the lack of knowledge, or the preference for saving over investing.
According to Hargreaves Lansdown's personal finance analyst Sarah Coles, women know nothing or very little about investing. However, it is often found they do have what is required to get started.
Before we proceed with the article, it is worth mentioning two shocking facts:
In the past, banks used to refuse women mortgages without the support of a male guarantor. The practice existed even after the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1975.
Even though women were admitted to the London Stock Exchange in 1973, the first woman to get appointed in a senior position was only in 2001.
In today's scenario, women do not need to prove their marital status to decide what to do with their money, but there is still a gender gap in the finance sector.
Even though women have fought hard across the world to get financial independence, it is still unfortunate that investment knowledge gaps in women still persists.
Research has revealed that for every four people who hold an investment, one is female. This is a concern as the financial stability of the opposite sex is highly impacted in later life. Furthermore, this situation is not improving among the younger generations who are more tech-savvy and more connected to the world. A study has found that just 26 percent of young females are investing, as compared to 43 percent of men of the same age.
A Chartered Insurance Institute study has revealed that in the United Kingdom, the pension wealth of women in the age group of 60-64 is 35,700 pounds, which is about 25 percent of the wealth held by men in the same age group.
There could be two reasons for it. The first is mostly due to the gender pay gap. Secondly, females believe in saving rather than investing in financial products. The study is further supported by HMRC statistics that state how one million more females opened savings accounts in recent years as compared to males.
However, although the women are more financially independent when compared to men, why do they invest less?
In order to answer this question, a search was conducted on YouGov to understand what women do with their money. In light of this, it was found that about fifty percent less women as compared to men had a sound knowledge about investments.
To further understand why this is the case, let us delve a little into the history of investments. In the earlier eras, investment companies were mostly crowded with old boys clubs which made some women feel isolated. Later, the industry also marketed the products almost exclusively to men.
According to The Money Panel financial coach Catherine Morgan, some women find financial advisers to be male-dominated. To add on, there is no alternative to male financial advisers to encourage investing among women.
Boring Money CEO, Holly Mackay, expressed how the fact that females are likely to be business owners, breadwinners, and sometimes household decision makers, the culture for investment seems outdated. She added that there is a perception issue, where the image of an investor was of old and plummy-toned men rather than for a mum in jeans. Some women even totally rejected the idea of investing.
A gap in women's investment knowledge might negatively impact their freedom, security and liberty to choose. In the UK, only 13 percent of females have stocks and shares. Therefore, more work has to be done to bring them at par to men so that women may experience the same financial stability after retirement.
The Department for Work and Pensions has revealed that there is a 40 percent gap in the pension pots of men and women. If the trend continues, it is believed the gap may further widen, putting more pressure on the earning capacity of men.
Morgan further added that women with small capital lack both knowledge and confidence in investments. They believe more in saving for bricks-and-mortar than investing in financial products.
As such, financial companies need to actively create a financial culture among women and to break the barriers that prevent women engagements.
The female investment knowledge gap is much higher, even today when the entire world is connected through technology and getting the right information is just a click away. In order to tackle this issue, financial companies need to combat the issues that lay with women's perceptions and confidence in investments. Hopefully in the near future, more women would be involved in the investment sector to increase their financial stability.
