We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Extended Hours Investment Platforms.
Trading hours refer to the duration between the opening and closing of trading exchanges. With extended hours trading, trades before and after the fixed trading hours are facilitated. Extended hours trading is sometimes also referred to as pre-market trading. In the United States, extended hours trading occurs between 4:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. While extended hours trading is possible on electronic networks, there are limitations on the volume that can be traded, unlike fixed hours trading.
With the proliferation of Electronic Communication Networks (ECNs), it has helped facilitate retail investors with new opportunities of trading after regular exchange hours. Extended hours trading help investors to act quickly on breaking news and events taking place before or after the general working hours. This is so as breaking news and evemts are the best indicators to most accurately predict the direction of the open market.
However, due to low liquidity, the market is risky and volatile during such hours. Most brokers require traders to limit the orders and only permit orders on the Reg NMS securities.
There is a general saying that opportunities knock the door abreast of risks. This is true for investors in extended hours trading. They can turn it into an opportunity if their participation is strategic. Suppose a trade is closed at $64 and the bid is placed to buy at $62 or $63. The selling is fully possible at $62 or $63 even though a few minutes ago the price was $64. This is so as fewer bids exist in the market during the extended hours.
There are several risks highlighted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The following are some of the significant risks that have been mentioned:
The trading volume is lower in extended hours as compared to the regular hours. This makes executing trades a bit difficult as not all the trades get executed during such hours.
The bid-ask spreads are wider during such hours as the trading volume is lower. This affects the market price adversely. Hence, executing the orders becomes harder at favourable prices.
Less trading volume means greater volatility. Greater volatility is then further reciprocated with wider bid-ask spreads. Therefore, extended hours traders might notice that in a very short time, prices can move drastically. Furthermore, the stock prices during such hours may not match with that of regular trading hours, as exemplified above.
Most extended hours traders are large institutional investors since they have access to more resources.
Breaking news or events may break before or after the regular trading hours. This means traders may not be able to act quickly and wait until the market opens again the next day. Therefore, to overcome this issue, some investors have turned to extended trading hours. By doing so, investors can quickly act on the news or events even after the market has closed. However, this is not possible in traditional exchanges. Only electronic networks facilitate such extended hours with a limit on the volume that can be traded.
Furthermore, it should be noted that in extended hours trading, the market is generally volatile, with low liquidity and high risks. Also, not all stocks can be traded due to increased bid-ask spreads. Given the risks and volatility involved, beginners are not recommended to participate in extended hours trading.
