There are various reasons for the recent Ethereum price fall, and one of these is the news of China's decision to ban cryptocurrency mining in its regions, including the use of crypto services for the country's financial institutions. A few top Chinese officials revealed in mid-May that disaster may be on the cards for cryptocurrencies.
A statement from the Chinese officials meeting, said that the country is required to be alert and that it must look out for the upcoming risks of cryptocurrencies. The government should ban mining as well as trading in the country to prevent these risks from materialising.
Immediately after the meeting statement was published, Bitcoin suffered a sharp dip in price and reached a low of $33,590 from $41,000 about a couple of hours before. Similarly, Ethereum lost about 12 percent of its value.
Following the meeting, the China Internet Finance Association warned the financial institutions against partaking in any business related to cryptocurrencies, as the segment is highly volatile in nature.
The step of the dragon is not new. A similar measure was taken in 2017 which led to a massive Bitcoin selloff. A Chinese media reporter writes that the cryptocurrency value has soared as well as plummeted and related trading speculation has rebounded. All these have violated the safety of investors, nevermind disrupted the normal financial and economic order in the country.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the value of Ethereum, Bitcoin and some more cryptocurrencies have jumped up and reached all-time highs. In April 2021, one unit of Bitcoin was valued at $65,000. Since then a steady price drop has been witnessed.
The situation became worse when Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, announced his company would not accept payment through Bitcoin as large energy consumption is needed to mine the coins which encourages the burning of coal to generate power.
Apart from all these, the United States President Joe Biden proposed a mandatory report to the IRS if more than $10,000 in cryptocurrency is transferred.
Ethereum crashed heavily on the GDAX exchange in June 2017. The value plummeted from $319 to 10 cents within seconds. A multimillion dollar market sell order was blamed for the event then.
According to GDAX vice president, Adam White, several orders were filled up from $317.81 to $224.48 due to the multimillion dollar market sell order.
The price dip continued and this led to about 800 stop loss orders. As an aftermath, the crypto coin traded as low as 10 cents on the exchange.
GDAX was widely criticized over social media and it was alleged that some sort of illegal activity had happened then. However, the exchange denied all such allegations. White said no indication of wrongdoing was found in their investigations.
White further added that the trades conducted were final and cannot be reversed. A trading halt was temporarily enforced, but trading was restored shortly after.
However, traders were outraged and complained that the exchange lacked proper controls. For many, the event was a painful experience. A large sum of the affected party complained on the social media forum Reddit to have lost a large sum of money, somewhere between $3,000 and $9,000.
Some were winners too. The event offered an opportunity to make large amounts of money. A forum user posted a trade history screenshot revealing that an investor had an order of about 3,800 Ethereum at the time when the value dropped to 10 cents.
However, one need not be disappointed by the Ethereum price fall, as companies like Microsoft have helped to restore the price. Data reveals that Ethereum is up by about 4,100 percent this year.
Ethereum is second to Bitcoin in popularity. It is one of the most traded cryptocurrencies in the world. Many new cryptocurrency enthusiasts are showing interest in the crypto coin with an expectation to make money quicker. It is important to understand here that the Ethereum price fall is a reality. The price may not always be on the rise. The industry has witnessed several dips, the most disastrous of which was in 2017 on a particular exchange.
In 2021, the price of Ethereum is heading southward following an all-time high. The trend is similar for other major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin.
