Buyers or sellers in a futures contract are obliged to buy or sell the assets on a predefined future date and at a predefined price. The quality and quantity of the asset are detailed in the contracts, and these are standardised. Some of the contracts call for asset delivery in physical form, while others settle down in cash.
The size of the S&P 500 is too large. With the help of eMini's, investors get the opportunity of buying a fraction of the index. It is traded round-the-clock, volatile, highly affordable and ideal for active traders.
The settlement price remains the same as the regular-sized contract but slightly differs due to the rounding up.
Both are the same but differ in size. They are valuable and used for either speculating or hedging. The primary difference is affordability. eMini futures is best for investors who want to invest less capital.

The ticker symbol of eMini S&P is ES and is traded on the Globex electronic trading platform of the Chicago Mercantile. It was first introduced on September 9, 1997, when the value of a full-sized S&P contract became too large and became tough for small traders to invest. Within a short duration, it became popular. Hedge funds prefer it compared to the big S&P.
Following the success of eMini S&P, the eMini NASDAQ-100 contract was introduced, and it was one-fifth of the original size.
A report of SEC/CFTC reveals the sale of 75,000 eMini contracts was the primary cause of the 2010 Flash Crash. In just 20 minutes, the firm accidentally instructed the trading program to dump all the eMini's in series instead of spreading the sell orders over a longer period.
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange addressed the claim later without mentioning any accidental instruction. It said the program was a methodical hedge.
Several buyers bought around 16,000 eMini S&P 500 on December 7, 2016. A series of stop orders were triggered to buy a contract that was trading at 2225.00. The contracts were valued at $1.8 billion. The sequence led to a sharp market rally for three days. Until now, it is one of the biggest eMini trades.
S&P 500 is the abbreviation of the Standard and Poor's 500. It is a weighted and free-float stock market index and covers 500 large companies listed in the US stock exchanges.
The ten most prominent companies in the S&P 500 include Apple, Microsoft, JPMorgan, Amazon, Alphabet, Facebook, Tesla and Johnson & Johnson. The index is maintained by the S&P Dow Jones Indices.
