The growth of blockchain technology has gained worldwide attention. More and more consumers worldwide are using this technology as a means of finance. Different countries have taken different stands on this topic. Turkey has been quiet for the longest time regarding crypto. The government announced recently that it will soon launch the pilot phase of its national blockchain project. This will be the launch of the digital Turkish lira. In this article, we will talk about this project and its possible benefits.
By the end of 2020, the government announced its interest and its project to digitalise its national currency. The idea will be to create a blockchain-based lira, that will possibly be pegged to the national currency and other assets. Such a project will allow the Turkish government to capitalise on the growth of blockchain and to use it to create a better financial system. This initiative puts Turkey ahead of many other couturiers. Plenty of other governments have expressed interest in the creation of digital national currencies, but few have taken the appropriate steps in this direction.
Turkey now is in the same category as China and a handful of other counties that are set to pilot and test national digital currencies. Turkey will conclude its pilot testing program by approximately the end of 2021. This project was a total surprise as Turkey had kept this project a secret for a long time. Nobody knew about it. As of right now, all we know is that the government is getting the resources ready to launch this project. It is collaborating with specialists and creating the right teams to launch the pilot testing phase.
This project will allow Turkey to create a more efficient monetary system and a faster financial system. The digital Turkish lira will have instant settlements and it will have low fees of remittance. I expect the digital Turkish lira to rely on some incorporation of blockchain features with current banking features or the creation of new digital payments systems, such as digital wallets. The use of digital wallets will make banking available to the unbanked population. Digital wallets are easy to use and there is a massive move towards them.
As with other national digital currencies, we expect the Turkish lira to be pegged to the national currency or some other assets. The idea will be to create a digital token that retains its value and does not suffer from large price volatility like other crypto tokens.
This digital currency will also capitalise on global trends such as other existing cryptocurrencies. Turkey seeks to welcome this technology and has no issues using it to the benefit of its citizens. The other possible benefits are a more centralised system and more efficiency of transactions. Transactions will be fast, secure and it won't matter to who and where you send funds to. This project seeks to reap the long-term benefits of blockchain-related technologies.
This token will grow the Turkish economy and it will allow it to enter and compete in the blockchain market. The digital lira will offer better methods of financing and more convenient ways to send funds. This project will put Turkey in a better position in the crypto world. We will have to wait and see how this project goes on. We are optimistic about its outcome.
So far we do not have any updates on the next steps. All we know is that the government is serious about this project and that they are ahead of many other nations.
