Crude vs Brent

What is powering all these electric equipment, cars, ships, and even aeroplanes? In my view, most of these things are still powered by one of the by products of crude oil, such as petrol or diesel. Things could change in the future, but I believe oil remains at the centre stage of power generation. That is the reason I consider oil to be among the top traded and consumed commodities in the world.

A change in oil prices can bring countries out of recession and even bring economic hardships. I have noticed that oil exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq tend to welcome rising oil prices, while countries that rely heavily on oil imports, such as India and Japan, often suffer due to the high costs.

Oil in its raw and unrefined form is called crude oil. Today, there are two well known types of crude oil named Brent and WTI. I find that the basic components of both, being black coloured crude oils, remain largely the same.

Crude Oil vs Brent From a Financial Markets Trading Perspective
Trading Factor Crude Oil Brent My Trading View
Typical Market I usually trade Crude Oil through WTI futures, CFDs or related derivatives. I usually trade Brent through Brent futures, CFDs or related derivatives. I see both as major oil markets, but WTI is more closely linked to the United States while Brent is more representative of international oil pricing.
Example Price If WTI Crude is trading at USD 75 per barrel, 100 barrels have a notional value of USD 7500. If Brent is trading at USD 79 per barrel, 100 barrels have a notional value of USD 7900. I compare the two prices because the difference between them can reveal changes in regional supply and demand.
Example Price Move If WTI moves from USD 75 to USD 77, the price has increased by about 2.67 percent. If Brent moves from USD 79 to USD 81, the price has increased by about 2.53 percent. Both markets can move sharply when there is unexpected news concerning supply, demand or geopolitics.
Example Profit If I have exposure to 100 barrels at USD 75 and the price rises to USD 77, my gross gain is USD 200. If I have exposure to 100 barrels at USD 79 and the price rises to USD 81, my gross gain is USD 200. The dollar impact depends on the number of barrels controlled rather than only the percentage move.
Example Loss If I have exposure to 100 barrels at USD 75 and the price falls to USD 72, my gross loss is USD 300. If I have exposure to 100 barrels at USD 79 and the price falls to USD 76, my gross loss is USD 300. I calculate the possible dollar loss before entering because oil can react quickly to unexpected information.
Contract Example A standard WTI futures contract commonly represents 1000 barrels, so a USD 1 price move represents USD 1000 before costs. A standard Brent futures contract commonly represents 1000 barrels, so a USD 1 price move represents USD 1000 before costs. This makes even a relatively small price move financially significant when I trade full sized futures contracts.
Small Movement Example On 1000 barrels, a move from USD 75.00 to USD 75.50 represents USD 500. On 1000 barrels, a move from USD 79.00 to USD 79.50 represents USD 500. I pay close attention to position size because a movement of only 50 cents can create a substantial profit or loss.
Price Relationship WTI can trade below or above Brent depending on United States inventories, transportation conditions and regional demand. Brent often reflects broader international supply conditions and seaborne crude markets. I monitor the difference between WTI and Brent rather than treating them as completely separate markets.
Spread Example If WTI trades at USD 75 and Brent trades at USD 79, WTI is USD 4 below Brent. If Brent trades at USD 79 while WTI is USD 75, the Brent premium is USD 4 per barrel. A widening or narrowing price difference can give me information about relative supply conditions between the two markets.
Inventory Sensitivity WTI can react strongly to changes in United States crude inventories and storage conditions. Brent is generally influenced more broadly by international supply and demand conditions. For WTI I pay particularly close attention to United States inventory data.
Geopolitical Sensitivity WTI reacts to major geopolitical events but can also be heavily influenced by domestic United States production. Brent can be especially sensitive to geopolitical risks affecting Europe, the Middle East and international shipping routes. I often watch Brent closely when geopolitical risk is the main driver of the oil market.
Supply Driver Example If United States production rises unexpectedly, I may expect additional pressure on WTI prices. If international production falls by a significant amount, I may expect stronger support for Brent prices. I identify whether the news is primarily regional or global before choosing which oil market to trade.
Demand Driver Example Weak United States economic activity can reduce expectations for domestic fuel demand and pressure WTI. Weak global economic activity can reduce expectations for worldwide oil demand and pressure Brent. I treat economic growth expectations as an important part of both markets.
Volatility WTI can experience rapid price changes around inventory reports, production news and major economic events. Brent can experience rapid price changes around geopolitical developments, production decisions and global demand expectations. I expect significant volatility in both and avoid assuming that recent calm conditions will continue.
Leverage Example If I control USD 10000 of WTI exposure using USD 2000 of margin, I effectively have 5 times exposure relative to my deposited capital. If I control USD 10000 of Brent exposure using USD 2000 of margin, I effectively have 5 times exposure relative to my deposited capital. I focus on total market exposure because leverage can magnify both gains and losses.
Risk Example On USD 10000 of WTI exposure, a 4 percent adverse move represents approximately USD 400 before costs. On USD 10000 of Brent exposure, a 4 percent adverse move represents approximately USD 400 before costs. The similar percentage risk does not mean both markets will move identically because their regional drivers can differ.
Trade Planning I watch United States inventories, production, refinery activity, economic conditions and technical levels. I watch global supply, international demand, geopolitical developments, production decisions and technical levels. I choose between them based on which market is more directly exposed to the trading idea I have.
Overall Trading Character WTI gives me a strong view of the United States oil market and can react heavily to domestic supply conditions. Brent gives me a broader view of international oil conditions and global geopolitical risk. I see WTI as the more United States focused oil benchmark and Brent as the more internationally focused benchmark.

Crude vs Brent

The Difference Between Brent and WTI

If I really have to differentiate one crude oil from another, I would do so based on the following 4 parameters:

Let me walk through each of these points in more detail.

Crude vs Brent Differences

Extraction Point

WTI is widely used in one of the world's biggest economies, the United States of America. There are a few oil rich states in the USA, such as North Dakota and Texas, with the Permian Basin in West Texas being a major production hub today. Once the oil is extracted from these locations, it is transported through pipelines to Cushing, Oklahoma, which is the official delivery point for WTI contracts.

In the past, WTI oil was extracted in a similar way to the rest of the world. But things changed with the development of shale extraction technology. Before the shale revolution, there was no practical way of extracting oil trapped in shale rock formations. After the shale revolution took hold in the 2010s, US oil supply increased significantly and the cost associated with it dropped. This technology allowed US based WTI oil to become far more competitive with the rest of the world, and the USA is now one of the largest crude producers globally.

Brent, also known as Brent Crude, is not extracted from land. Instead, it comes from the North Sea, where it is actually a blend of crude drawn from around 15 different oil fields across the Brent and Ninian systems. From what I understand, many of these fields are ageing, which is why Brent today is really a blended benchmark rather than oil from a single source.

In short, WTI comes from the land while Brent comes from the sea.

Geopolitical Effects

Oil comes from many different countries, and geopolitical events affect both production and pricing. Most countries, apart from the USA, rely almost entirely on crude oil imports since that is the only realistic option available to them.

OPEC, the organisation representing many of the top oil producing countries, along with its extended alliance OPEC+, which includes Russia, continues to play a major role in setting production levels that influence Brent pricing.

Some of the top producing countries, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the USA, play a significant role in the crude oil market. Any political trouble or unrest can cause serious swings in prices. For example, I have seen Brent prices climb above ninety dollars a barrel during periods of tension around the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which a large share of the world's seaborne oil passes. When there are concerns about Iranian activity near that route, prices tend to react quickly.

If I am talking about Brent oil specifically, the region to watch closely is the Middle East, since a large share of the world's oil reserves and trade routes are concentrated there.

Oil World Map

Composition of Brent and WTI

WTI is generally considered lighter and easier to refine than Brent, since its sulfur content sits at around 0.24 percent with an API gravity of roughly 39.6 degrees. Brent, by comparison, is a touch heavier and requires slightly more effort to refine, with a sulfur content of around 0.37 percent and an API gravity of about 38.3 degrees.

Although the difference in sulfur content is fairly small, both WTI and Brent are classified as sweet crude, since anything under 0.5 percent sulfur falls into that category. As an example, this is different from a heavier, more sour grade like Dubai Crude, which is the benchmark many Asian refiners use and which contains noticeably more sulfur.

Crude vs Brent Price Forecast

Price Difference

If I check the latest prices, Brent is currently trading in the high 80s per barrel while WTI sits a few dollars lower, in the low to mid 80s. Both benchmarks have moved up recently amid tension around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Historically, WTI has traded at a discount to Brent, even though land based transportation would logically seem more costly than shipping by sea.

I think the explanation lies largely in shale technology. By using shale extraction, the USA dramatically expanded its own oil supply at a lower cost, and because WTI is landlocked at Cushing, Oklahoma, it can be more sensitive to local pipeline and storage conditions in the US, while Brent, being waterborne, reflects broader international demand and is more exposed to global shipping routes and Middle East geopolitics. That is generally why Brent tends to trade at a premium to WTI.

Crude vs Brent Verdict

In my opinion, oil still holds a dominant position in the global economy for now, but I do not think this will last indefinitely. I have seen many oil exploration and marketing companies begin shifting resources toward renewable energy projects as part of long term diversification plans.

Looking ahead, I expect power generation methods such as hydro, solar and wind to keep growing in importance relative to oil, even if crude remains a major force in global markets for years to come.
