Consumer confidence index, also known as the CCI, is an economic metric based on a survey. This survey is done by the Conference Board and measures the confidence or pessimism of the consumers.
For example, if a consumer is confidentabout his financial situation, it will be considered a plus point. If the majority of the people are more optimistic, then the CCI reading will increase. But if the consumers are pessimistic about their financial situation, the CCI reading will be lower. When the CCI reading is high, consumers tend to spend more money. But a low CCI reading indicates that consumer spending is down.
A healthy or high consumer spending stimulates the economy and makes the domestic market stronger. For this reason many experts believe that the consumer confidence index is an important metric that tells us how confident consumers are about the economic conditions of the country.
In fact, a low CCI reading means that the chances of a recession become a lot higher.
The CCI survey results are released every month, year after year. On the last Tuesday, general people find out about consumer confidence in the USA. Since it is considered a very credible economic indicator, its readings are critical regarding the US economy.
From business conditions to employment to income, this survey covers it all and tries to paint the overall financial situation of the participants. To say that the CCI is a barometer of the US economic health would not be an understatement.
Nielsen, famous for providing metrics and valuable information about consumers' buying and spending habits, is behind the CCI survey.
To get the results, about 3,000 questionnaires are used as a standard sample size. In 1967, the survey was initially started, with its results being published every two months. But in 1977 (about ten years later), the frequency of data announcement was changed to once every month, which continues today. In total, about five questions are asked from the questionnaires. Two of the results are feelings about the current economic conditions, while the other three are related to how they feel about the future.
If the consumers feel confident, they will also respond positively to the questions related to future expectations. But if they feel pessimistic, they will not be confident about their present and future financial condition.
There are three answers for each question: Neutral, positive, or negative. After looking at each answer and deriving a mean or average value, the CCI results are compiled and then published for the general public to view.
Just like the CCI is known to provide information about the US economy, similar economic metrics and surveys are also carried out in other parts of the world. But since the US is known to be a major economy, it has gained more importance among the investors.
A number of people believe that the CCI is a lagging indicator. But if you think about it, the CCI is also a leading indicator since it contains questions about the future.
If for some reason, the unemployment rate in the US starts to rise or the average wage declines, it can cause a sharp decline in the consumer confidence index. The reason for this decline would be pretty straightforward actually: ince pseople will lose their jobs, they will have less money to spend. In turn, they will not feel confident about their economic conditions in the present and the near future.
Similarly, if a business owner experiences some loss or difficult business conditions, he will not respond to the survey positively and will likely go with neutral or negative answers. As a result, the CCI reading can go down once again.
But with low unemployment rates and rising average wages, the CCI reading starts to go up, which shows that the confidence is increasing. If you think about it, the CCI reading shows that the US economic health can also affect the other economies of the world connected to the US economy utilising trade.
Today, international trade has become a centre of attention as the economies around the world engage in mutual trades, including the USA (United States of America).
