Chinese EV Stocks Guide

Analysis by Andrew Blumer, Updated Last updated - March 27, 2024

Chinese EV Stocks

Now that the financial markets are recovering from the aftereffect of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese EV stocks are increasing in demand. It is believed the years 2024 and 2025 will see a high growth in the value of Chinese EV stocks.

The last three months saw NIO stocks move upwards in value, increasing by around 110 percent. Similarly, stocks of Li Auto and Xpeng were up by around 80 percent and 157 percent respectively. It has been found that strong delivery figures have subsequently pushed prices up.

Moreover, these three companies capitalised on the market by selling additional shares at attractive valuations to use funds for innovation and expansion.

However, the buzz surrounding Xpeng and NIO should be accredited to their plans for new vehicles. Li is focusing on a small gasoline engine to generate electric power, which will reduce the reliance on charging infrastructures.

As of now, the company offers one vehicle and it is one of the top-selling in the SUV segment in China. More than 6,000 units were sold last December. NIO, on the other hand, sold about 7,000 units of its SUVs.

It is believed the Li sales may grow by about 112 percent in 2021. NIO is expected to grow by about 18.5 percent across the same period.

Chinese EV Players

The EV segment is booming in China. Chinese EV accounts for more than 50 percent of global deliveries. Further growth is expected as the Chinese government targets EV sales to be 25% of total car sales by 2025. The current share is at just 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Tesla leads the Chinese luxury EV market with respect to the number of units produced. It has a manufacturing facility in Shanghai. Li, Xpeng and NIO are three young companies listed in the US stock exchanges.

Li, NIO, Xpeng Overview

Founded in 2014, NIO currently offers three premium EVs in the SUV sector - ES8, ES6, and EC6. The company is developing cars with self-driving technology and also working on other unique innovations, such as Battery as a Service (BaaS).

Li sells electric vehicles equipped with a gasoline engine to help generate additional electric power in order to rely less on charging infrastructure. Its Li ONE SUV is the top-selling SUV in China.

Xpeng deals in the premium EV sector but at an affordable price compared to that of Tesla. The company started production in 2018.

Valuation

The market capitalisation of NIO is around $37 billion. The market cap of Li and Xpeng are $15 billion and $14 billion respectively. Even though valuations are high, investors are still betting on whether these companies may witness future growth in the domestic market. NIO might perhaps fare better, as it has a longer history of production and respectable track record.

Future of Electric Vehicles

When discussing Chinese EV stocks it is important to mention the future of electric vehicles. Potential partnerships between EV start-ups and automakers has heightened government efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, and advancements in battery technology has raised expectations for good industry growth.

Aspark Owl, Audi e-tron GT, Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW i4, BMW iNext, BMW iX3, Bollinger B1, Bollinger B2, Byton M-Byte Concept, Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Celestiq, Chevrolet Electric Pickup, Faraday Future FF91, Ford F-150 Electric, Genesis Essentia, GMC Hummer, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Jaguar XJ, Jeep Wrangler EV, Lagonda All-Terrain, Lexus EV SUV, Lordstown Endurance, Lotus Evija, Lucid Air, Mazda MX-30, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Mercedes-Benz EQB, and Mercedes-Benz EQC are some of the electric vehicles offered by global auto giants which will be launched over the next few years.

The research and development of these companies believe that the future of electric vehicles will be prosperous and will impact positively on Chinese EV stocks as the products of China see competitive pricing.

Chinese EV Stocks Verdict

Chinese EV stocks are rising in demand amid a period where the automotive industry is attempting to gradually migrate from traditional engines to electric vehicles. The years 2024 and 2025 will be revolutionary for the above three Chinese manufacturers, NIO, Xpeng and Li, who are set to spark further auto-vehicular innovations.

Currently, China produces 50 percent of the supply of global electric vehicles and more Chinese players are expected to move into this industry sector. This will surely acquire increased attention from investors and thus will see an increase in the value of Chinese EV stocks.

Beginners who are seeking to make money in the short term may wish to invest in Chinese EV stocks. It is advised that one should first study the three companies, researching their past performances, before investing. Ample knowledge about the shares and experience in the market are two basic necessities to achieve success.
