A CFD rollover is an important concept to understand for traders interested in contracts for differences. In a CFD rollover, all the open positions under contract for differences are moved over to the next available contract after the expiry date automatically.
A CFD rollover is performed by a CFD provider or a broker to help keep the position open even after the expiry of futures CFD. Some brokers or providers charge a small fee for the feature while others make it completely free. A couple of good examples of free of charge CFD rollover include trading assets oil and natural gas. However, it should be noted that the rollover is carried forward at a new rate. The brokers or CFD providers offering rollover generally sets automatic rollover dates as if it is not subject to such, the position would close on the expiry date.
The rollover takes place at the new rate. This means the rate may be higher or lower than the existing one. The monetary adjustment is either added or subtracted from the trader's account to balance the differences.
However, the value of the position will be subject to the market movements and based on the original opening level, spread, as well as the size. This means that the equity before and after the rollover remains identical.
If the new contract is traded at a higher rate, there will be a negative adjustments in a buy position. On the other hand, if the new contract is traded at a lower price, the buy position will get a positive adjustment.
Similarly, if the new contract is at a higher price, the sell position will get a positive adjustment. Conversely, if the new price is lower, the sell position will receive a negative adjustment. It is important to remember here that rates of stop orders like close at loss and close at profit are adjusted accordingly.
Let us take an example of a buy position on Germany 30. Assume that 100 contracts of it have been met and the rollover is scheduled for December 31 and at 22:45 UTC. The prevailing sell rate is 12450 while the new rate is 12460, which is higher by 10 euros.
When the position will be rolled over, subtraction needs to be done for adjustment to ensure the equity is not changed. The following details the adjustment:
This means 1,000 euros will be adjusted with subtraction from the account.
Now, let us take an example of the sell position on UK 100. Assume that the sell position of 100 such contracts are opened and it is scheduled to rollover on January 19 at 23:50 UTC. The prevailing rate is 7180 and the new rate would be 7190, which is higher by 10 pounds.
During the rollover time, the adjustment is added as below:
This means 1,000 pounds will be adjusted with addition to the account.
Traders are recommended to note the rollover dates at the brokers-end before opening a position. Usually, the dates are on Sunday mornings once every three months. The positions which are not closed by Friday, the last trading day before the scheduled Sunday, and by the end of the trading day are rolled over automatically on the Sunday morning.
Those who find that the positions are profitable believe a greater profit can be reaped will typically allow the rollover to take place. If it is found the positions will not be profitable, they will close the positions before the rollover. In some instances, traders will close a position even if profit has been made due to a lack of confidence.
A CFD rollover is ideal if the opened positions are making a profit and it is believed the same may continue even after the expiry of a contract. Most brokers and CFD providers offer the service to carry forward the opened positions with a new contract and at a new rate beyond the CFD expiry. However, a CFD rollover is not great if the positions are not making ample profit or believed not to continue making a profit after the expiry. In this case, the rollover is done automatically. If the rollover is needed, the trader can close the position before the expiry of the contract to avoid the automatic rollover.
