| Investor | Investment / Example | Position Type | Estimated Investment / Exposure | Estimated Return / Loss | Outcome | Investment Thesis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cathie Wood | Tesla (TSLA) | Long equity | Hundreds of millions of dollars across ARK funds; at times one of ARKK's largest positions | Major multi-year gains; exact realized return varies because ARK repeatedly bought and sold shares | Major Winner | Electric vehicles, autonomous driving, robotics, energy storage and AI. |
| Cathie Wood | Zoom Video (ZM) | Long equity | Estimated hundreds of millions at peak exposure | Large early gains followed by substantial losses from the stock's pandemic-era highs | Large Drawdown | Remote work, cloud communications and digital collaboration. |
| Cathie Wood | Roku (ROKU) | Long equity | Estimated hundreds of millions across ARK portfolios | Strong early appreciation followed by a major decline from 2021 highs | Mixed | Streaming television, connected-TV advertising and disruption of traditional broadcasting. |
| Cathie Wood | Coinbase (COIN) | Long equity | Hundreds of millions across ARK ETFs over time | Highly volatile — substantial losses during the crypto downturn followed by significant recoveries | High Volatility | Cryptocurrency adoption and blockchain-based financial infrastructure. |
| Cathie Wood | ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) | Innovation-focused portfolio | Billions of dollars in fund assets at various points | More than +150% total return in 2020, followed by severe subsequent drawdowns | Boom & Bust | Concentrated investments in disruptive innovation with a long investment horizon. |
| Michael Burry | U.S. Housing / Subprime Mortgages | Credit-default swaps / Short | Approximately $1B+ notional mortgage exposure during the pre-2008 trade | Estimated hundreds of millions of dollars in profits for Scion and its investors | Historic Winner | Identified deteriorating mortgage credit quality before the global financial crisis. |
| Michael Burry | GameStop (GME) | Long equity | Estimated tens of millions of dollars | Significant estimated profit, although Scion exited before the biggest part of the 2021 meme-stock surge | Winner | Deep-value investment based on cash, restructuring potential and undervaluation. |
| Michael Burry | S&P 500 / Nasdaq ETFs — 2023 | Put options / bearish position | Large reported notional exposure; actual option premium was much smaller | Reported as a losing bearish trade after the positions were closed | Loss | Expected weakness or overvaluation in the broader U.S. equity market. |
| Michael Burry | Alibaba (BABA) | Long equity | About $21M disclosed position in Q3 2024 | Return depends strongly on entry and exit date; position was increased while Chinese equities remained volatile | Value Bet | Depressed valuation and potential recovery in major Chinese technology companies. |
| Michael Burry | Baidu (BIDU) | Long equity + options | About $13M equity value reported in Q3 2024, plus option exposure | Estimated / unresolved because later exit prices and complete derivatives economics are not public | Mixed / Unclear | Contrarian exposure to undervalued Chinese technology and AI businesses. |
Important: Investment amounts and returns in this table are approximate where noted. Public 13F filings show snapshots of U.S.-listed holdings but generally do not disclose exact purchase prices, sale prices, short positions or the true cash cost of many options positions. ARK's actively managed ETFs also trade positions over time, so assigning one exact return to an individual Cathie Wood investment can be misleading. This table is for educational comparison, not investment advice.
Michael Burry, the founder of Scion Capital and known for his role in The Big Short, has once again turned his attention to Tesla. On June 30 I watched him disclose a fresh short position in Tesla at $416.22 per share, part of a broader wave of bearish bets he opened that same day against companies tied to artificial intelligence and semiconductors. Alongside Tesla he shorted Caterpillar at $1,060.98, Nvidia at $198.09, the iShares Semiconductor ETF at $642.80, and Applied Materials at $729.40. He revealed all of this through his Substack newsletter Cassandra Unchained rather than waiting on a formal filing, since Scion's last SEC filing was back in November 2025 and its registration has since been terminated.
What strikes me about this round of bets is that Burry shorted Tesla into a rally rather than chasing a falling stock. Tesla had closed the prior session at $379.71 and jumped roughly 10% before he opened his position. He later added to several of these shorts on July 24, deepening his position in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF and initiating a new short in Micron. By late July his bets on Tesla and Caterpillar were paying off as the broader market pulled back, helped along by Tesla's disappointing second quarter earnings, where EPS came in well below analyst expectations. Burry said at the time that he hadn't covered the Tesla short, noting that the position was shrinking on its own.
Not every piece of this basket has gone his way. Nvidia has actually climbed since he opened his position against it, a reminder that even a well timed short book doesn't always sweep every trade. On the long side, Burry has also built a sizable bet on sports betting names, with a large position in Flutter and a smaller one in DraftKings, alongside a stake in JD.com that he's called one of his top holdings.
Cathie Wood, meanwhile, has stayed true to form as one of Tesla's most persistent bulls. Through Ark Investment Management she remains an active trader around Tesla's earnings, and I've noticed she tends to buy into weakness rather than sell into it. After Tesla's most recent quarterly results disappointed and the stock slumped, she added tens of millions of dollars worth of shares across her funds. Tesla continues to sit among the top holdings in the Ark Innovation ETF by portfolio weight.
Alongside her Tesla purchases, Wood has also been buying into names like Circle Internet Group, WeRide, Kodiak AI, and Pony AI, while trimming positions in companies such as Figma, 10x Genomics, Twist Bioscience, Deere, and Caterpillar, notably the same Caterpillar that Burry has been shorting. It's a clear illustration of how differently these two investors read the same market: Burry sees an overextended AI and semiconductor rally, while Wood continues to bet on Tesla and next generation technology names as the future of growth.
