When I look at AI and investing today, I think the better question is whether AI can beat the market consistently rather than whether it can beat it at all. A trading system can outperform the S&P 500 for 1 year, 3 years or even longer, but maintaining that advantage is much harder. In 2025, the S&P 500 gained about 18% and recorded 39 record closing highs. At the same time, about 79% of actively managed large cap US equity funds underperformed the S&P 500. Over the 15 years ending in 2025, about 90% of large cap funds underperformed their benchmark. I see those numbers as a useful reminder of how difficult sustained outperformance really is.
I would not say that a computer can never beat the market. Quantitative investment firms have already demonstrated that mathematical models and automated trading systems can produce exceptional results. Renaissance Technologies' Medallion Fund is one famous example. It generated average annual returns of about 39% after fees between 1988 and 2018. What I take from this example is not that AI automatically produces winning investments, but that data, mathematics, computing power and disciplined execution can create an edge under the right circumstances.
Where I find AI particularly useful is in scale. A human analyst might study 20 or 30 companies closely, while an AI system can process information on thousands of securities and continuously compare prices, earnings, trading volumes, interest rates, economic indicators and news. A model can examine millions of historical observations and identify relationships that I would struggle to notice manually. If a particular combination of valuation, momentum and earnings data historically produced stronger returns, AI can identify it and test whether the relationship survives after trading costs are included.
The problem is that financial markets constantly change. A model trained on the previous 10 years of data can encounter an event that has no close historical equivalent. Interest rate decisions, wars, tariffs, elections, regulations, unexpected earnings results and changes in investor sentiment can alter prices extremely quickly. In 2025 alone, US equities came close to bear market territory in April before recovering strongly enough for the S&P 500 to finish the year approximately 18% higher. A model that reacted badly during the decline could have produced a completely different result from one that remained invested.

When I examine modern financial AI, I see deep learning being used for much more than analysing historical share prices. Systems can process company reports, earnings transcripts, economic releases, analyst commentary, news stories and social media posts. Instead of relying on 10 or 20 traditional financial indicators, a model can evaluate thousands of variables and continuously update its estimates as new information arrives.
I also see an important distinction between predicting a market and finding probabilities. If an AI model estimates that a particular setup has a 55% probability of producing a profitable trade, it does not need to be correct every time. Across 10,000 carefully controlled trades, a small statistical advantage can become meaningful. However, transaction costs, taxes, market impact and changing conditions can reduce or completely eliminate that advantage.
The scale of AI adoption in finance is already significant. A 2025 European securities industry survey covered 728 organisations across 19 countries, including 274 investment managers, 262 investment firms and 106 credit institutions providing investment services. The results showed that large financial organisations were already deploying or experimenting with AI. To me, this demonstrates that AI in financial markets has moved well beyond a theoretical experiment.
I would still treat historical training data carefully. Past performance cannot tell a system exactly what will happen tomorrow. AI can learn how markets reacted to previous inflation shocks, rate changes, recessions and earnings surprises, but the next event can unfold differently. I therefore see machine learning as a probability engine rather than a crystal ball.

I do not think widespread AI trading would result in a market with no gains or losses. I think the opposite is more realistic. If 1,000 trading firms use AI, they will not necessarily use the same data, models, time horizons or objectives. One system might hold a position for 3 milliseconds, another for 3 days and another for 3 years. Some systems will focus on momentum while others will analyse value, volatility, arbitrage or market making.
What I would expect is that obvious opportunities become harder to exploit. If an AI system discovers a repeatable pricing error that generates an extra 2% return and hundreds of competitors discover the same opportunity, traders will buy and sell until much of that advantage disappears. This is one reason I think successful quantitative firms protect their models, data and trading methods so carefully.
AI can also create new risks when many systems respond to similar information at the same time. If thousands of algorithms interpret a piece of news negatively and begin selling within seconds, liquidity can disappear and volatility can rise. I therefore do not see AI as something that automatically creates market balance. It can improve liquidity and price discovery under normal conditions, but crowded strategies can also amplify market movements.

My view is that AI can beat the market, but I would not assume that it can do so reliably or indefinitely. The evidence from professional money management shows just how high the hurdle is. In 2025, approximately 79% of active large cap US equity funds underperformed the S&P 500, while over the 10 years ending in 2025 at least 80% of equity funds across the institutional formats studied underperformed their respective benchmarks after fees. Even successful strategies can lose their advantage as competitors copy them and market conditions change.
Where I think AI has a genuine advantage is in processing information, testing strategies, controlling execution and making decisions consistently. It can analyse millions of observations without becoming tired, frightened or excited. It can monitor 5,000 stocks more easily than I can monitor 50. It can also execute rules in milliseconds and identify statistical relationships that would take a human analyst weeks to investigate.
For me, that makes AI a powerful investment tool rather than a guaranteed market beating machine. The strongest use of AI is not asking it to predict exactly where the S&P 500 will be in 12 months. I would use it to improve probabilities, identify opportunities, manage risk, reduce trading costs and process information faster. An AI system only needs a small and repeatable advantage to be valuable, but finding an advantage that survives competition, fees and changing market conditions remains the difficult part.
