This new paradigm, known as 'big data investing', is fast becoming the cornerstone of asset allocation strategies. The concept is simple enough: instead of buying just a stock or portfolio of stocks based on historical performance data, you can now try to exploit the market's tendency to react to sudden and extreme shifts in its parameters. In other words, by collecting, analysing, and interpreting large sets of real time data, you can use the insights they provide to make better informed decisions about when and what to buy or sell. This applies to all asset classes (equities, fixed income instruments, and derivatives) not only stocks. While this technology has been available since the 1970s, it has only recently gained traction in the financial world. I have watched it become the preferred method of most institutional investors I follow.
One of the reasons for this rise in interest in big data investing is the fact that tech companies, the 'data junkies', are now developing new technologies to harness these emerging trends. Nowhere is this clearer to me than in the global data centre rollout that is currently underpinning the entire AI economy. In 2026 alone, the five largest US hyperscalers, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle, are set to spend somewhere between 660 and 725 billion dollars on capital expenditure, up from around 380 to 410 billion dollars in 2025. Amazon alone is projected to spend close to 200 billion dollars, Microsoft around 190 billion dollars, Alphabet as much as 185 to 205 billion dollars and Meta up to 145 billion dollars. When I widen the lens to the 14 largest publicly listed data centre operators worldwide, total capex is tracking toward roughly 750 billion dollars this year, and Dell'Oro Group now expects global data centre capex to break through 1 trillion dollars in 2026. Over 23 gigawatts of new data centre capacity was under construction globally as of late 2025, with about three quarters of that in the United States, and analysts at Goldman Sachs now model cumulative AI related capex of roughly 7.6 trillion dollars between 2026 and 2031. I see this scale of build out as the physical backbone that big data investing strategies are increasingly built around, since the models feeding those strategies run on exactly this infrastructure. The result is that many of these new products and applications can run independently of their owners and are therefore far easier to understand and use. Because they run on complex algorithms, they are also less subject to outside influences. This makes them potentially very lucrative investments, both for the company and the individual.

One reason why many people in the financial services and tech industries are embracing big data investing is the relatively low cost of using it. For the most part, the software, while expensive, is still affordable for most. Companies also need to pay close attention to fees charged by individual brokers, in addition to being forced to pay hefty commissions to outside firms for putting together the data and marketing it to investors. This raises the costs significantly. I have noticed, though, that for many people who want to take advantage of the new technology, this relatively small cost of starting an account with a modest investment amount is more than offset by the potential returns from the wealth of data and technology that these new investment opportunities can bring. It helps to remember that the underlying compute powering these tools is not cheap to build. US data centre construction spending reached a monthly rate of roughly 45 billion dollars by the end of 2025, up 85 percent from two years earlier, and that cost eventually filters through to every AI powered product an investor might use.
Another thing that makes big data investing so attractive is the fact that it does not involve any additional technology to start getting the information needed. Investors simply need to find a company that offers the product or application that they need and then get in touch with the company. This removes one of the main barriers to investing in this new tech industry, technological competence. It also makes things a lot easier for potential clients, since there is no need to see any products or applications in person before deciding on whether or not to invest. Instead, all they have to do is visit the website of the company, fill out the required information, and then get in touch with a professional investor to discuss investing. From what I have seen, as AI infrastructure spending keeps climbing, this kind of low friction access to sophisticated tools is only going to become more common, not less.
