BOT is an abbreviation for the balance of trade. It is the difference between the value of exports and the imports of a country for a given period and is considered the largest component of a balance of payments (BOP). The balance of trade between goods and services can also be distinguished as two separate figures. It is also referred to as net exports, commercial balance, international trade balance or trade balance.
The difference between the total value of exports and the total value of imports is called BOT. Economists use it in measuring the relative strength of an economy of a country. If a country imports more and exports less with respect to value, it is a negative trade balance or a trade deficit.
On the contrary, if the exports are more than imports, it is called a positive trade balance or a trade surplus.
Several countries have witnessed a trade deficit, including the United States, which has been persistent since the 1970s. In the 19th century, it had frequent trade deficits. Between 1800 and 1870, there were just three years in between when there was a trade surplus.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic increased China's trade surplus, and global trade was reduced due to lockdowns.
Apart from other economic indicators, a trade deficit or surplus should be considered as a viable indicator of a country's business cycle and the economy's health. During a recession period, a country prefers creating jobs with an increase in exports, while the opposite is preferred when the economy is in expansion. During the expansion period, price competition is promoted, and this limits inflation.
In 2019, the United States had the largest trade deficit while Germany had the largest trade surplus with respect to the current account balance.
Japan was second largest, and China was the third-largest in terms of trade surplus. The United Kingdom was second, and Brazil was third in terms of trade deficit.
In August 2020, the total imports of the United States were $239 billion, and the total exports were $171.9 billion in goods and services. The trade balance, therefore, was -$67.1 billion. Hence, it was a $67.1 billion trade deficit.
A country with a large trade deficit usually borrows funds to make payments for goods and services. A country with a large trade surplus usually lends funds to deficit countries. The trade balance may also sometimes correlate to the economic and political stability as it reflects the volume of foreign investment in the economy.
The debit items of a country includes domestic spending abroad, foreign aid, imports and domestic investments abroad. On the other hand, the credit items are foreign investments in the domestic economy, foreign spending in the domestic economy, and exports. If the credit is subtracted from the debit items, a trade surplus or trade deficit is reached over a given period, usually over a month, one quarter or a year.
Value of exports in this article means the value of goods and services of a country sold to another country.
Value of imports is referred to as the value of goods and services bought from another country.
Balance of Trade (BOT) is the differences between exports and imports.A trade deficit or surplus may occur and may differ from country to country and from situation to situation. The US experienced its largest trade deficit in 2019.
The calculation of Balance of Trade is simple and easy: subtract the value of exports from the value of imports. If the value of exports is more, it means a trade surplus. If the value of exports is less, it is a trade deficit.
