If we look at the care business of Apple Inc. and Facebook, there is nothing common between them. If we look at Apple (AAPL), its main business is selling iPhones, iMac, Apple Watch, and related services of its products to make money. But despite this fact, the companies look at the privacy issues very differently. On the one hand, Apple thinks that Facebook's advertising model goes against privacy policies. That's why Apple is aiming to include an option for deselecting data tracking on apps installed on iOS devices.
Facebook didn't like what Apple had planned in its new operating system, 'iOS 14,' as it could cause a 50% drop in the advertising-driven revenue of the network. But, as usual, Apple didn't pay much heed to Facebook's concerns and is determined to release the new update.
By looking at the investor's sentiment, it becomes clear that they are more bullish on Apple (technology stock) than the social media company Facebook. Over the past 1 year, AAPL stock surged 80% mainly due to its recent 5G powered iPhone 12 release. On the other hand, if we look at the FB stock performance over the same period, it only registered a 25% growth and was plagued with regulatory problems, privacy concerns, and antitrust violations.
However, an investor knows that past results are only an indication and not a guarantee of return. That's why we must look at Facebook & Apple with a clear mind and figure out what's a better investment option:
In the fiscal year 2020, the total increase in revenue of Apple was around 6%. As for the earnings, Apple managed to grow it by 10%. The main contributors toward this growth were the sales of Apple hardware products such as AirPods, iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad.
Apple's service department also recorded an increase in revenue and sustained growth in recent years. According to statistics, around 600 million users are utilizing Apple's services and are considered to be paid users.
Among all the different countries and regions, Apple is witnessing a very high rate of growth in China. In fact, the sales in other regions only recorder a growth of 19% as compared to an outstanding 57% growth in China alone. Income levels and social status of the Chinese population is rising, which is contributing to higher sales of premium technology gadgets such as iPhone and others.
Looking forward, independent analysts and experts believe that the earnings of Apple as a company can rise between 15% to 25%. But I personally believe that these estimates are a little too modest, and Apple can easily outpace these growth numbers.
If we compare the state of affairs of Facebook with Apple, it seems things are not as smooth as they may appear for Facebook.
In the fiscal year 2020, the total increase in revenue of Facebook was around 22%. As for the earnings, Facebook managed to grow it by 57%. However, revenue from the advertisements still accounted for almost 98% of the total company's revenue, which is an alarming situation. As compared with Apple's diverse range of products and income streams, Facebook is still heavily reliant on its ads business.
As for the active users across various applications such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, The Facebook company witnessed a 16% increase in the monthly active users.
As for Facebook's revenue from each user, it also grew by 19% on a yearly basis. What's the point of having a large userbase if a company can not monetize it? It seems that Facebook knows how to monetize its user base properly.
But if we look at Facebook's CEO conference call, it seems that Facebook doesn't see eye to eye with Apple's new proposed updates. Facebook believes that Apple is trying to promote its own version of messaging app named 'iMessage.' To achieve that, Apple is trying to create an illusion of potential privacy issues which are totally misleading and baseless. It seems that Facebook was more focused on playing the victim instead of providing clarification on the privacy concerns.
The gross revenue of Facebook may grow 22% in 2022, but for the net earnings, only a small 5% growth is expected. The reason for such a difference between the growth of earnings and revenues is that Facebook is facing antitrust regulation problems as well as the new update of Apple. Some of the other problems that are putting a dent in the earnings are the high rate of taxes as well as various other investments.
If we are comparing Apple with Facebook, then Apple is the clear choice because of its business model and rapid expected growth in the coming years. Apple is already playing well against the competition from Android phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, and others.
On the other hand, Facebook is having a hard time with competition from Snapchat, Pinterest, TikTok, and other new-age social networks. In addition, experts believe that Facebook also has potential stability issues in its core business.
