When I compare Apple and Alphabet, I see two technology giants that make money in very different ways. Apple has built its business around products such as the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro, supported by services such as iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Pay, the App Store and Apple TV. Alphabet owns Google and operates businesses including Google Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Cloud, Waymo and Gemini. Both companies now have enormous ecosystems, but Apple remains more focused on devices and services while Alphabet has a much larger exposure to advertising, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
On Nasdaq, I can find Apple under the ticker 'AAPL'. Alphabet is available through 'GOOG' and 'GOOGL', with the main difference being voting rights. When I look at the scale of the businesses, I do not think it is accurate to simply say that Google is bigger than Apple. Apple generated $416.2 billion in revenue during fiscal 2025, while Alphabet exceeded $400 billion in annual revenue for the first time in 2025. The two companies are therefore operating at a remarkably similar revenue scale, although the sources of that revenue are very different.
Early investors in both companies have enjoyed extraordinary long term returns, but I would not assume that past performance will automatically continue. At their current size, adding another $1 trillion in market value is much harder than it was when these businesses were relatively small. What interests me more today is their ability to grow earnings, expand margins and turn investments in artificial intelligence into additional revenue.

When I look at Apple today, I see a company that has moved well beyond depending entirely on the next revolutionary hardware product. The iPhone remains its most important product, generating $209.6 billion of Apple's $416.2 billion fiscal 2025 revenue. However, Services generated another $109.2 billion, compared with $96.2 billion in fiscal 2024. That means Services grew by about 13.5% in a single year and accounted for more than 26% of Apple's total annual revenue.
I also see Apple's huge installed base as one of its strongest advantages. Once a customer owns an iPhone, Apple has multiple opportunities to generate additional revenue through iCloud, the App Store, Apple Music, AppleCare, Apple Pay and other services. The App Store alone had more than 850 million average weekly users worldwide during 2025. This ecosystem makes Apple's business much broader than simply selling a new iPhone every few years.
Apple's pricing remains higher than many competing devices, but I think the important point for investors is that customers continue to accept those prices. In Apple's fiscal third quarter of 2026, revenue reached $109.4 billion, an increase of 16% from the previous year. Diluted earnings per share reached $2.02, up 29%. Apple also reported a 50.1% gross margin, although roughly 2 percentage points of that figure benefited from tariff refunds.
When I look at Alphabet, the word that stands out to me is 'AI'. Google Search and YouTube remain enormous businesses, but Alphabet is now investing heavily in Gemini, Google Cloud, custom AI chips and AI infrastructure. Gemini had reached 950 million monthly active users by the second quarter of 2026, while Gemini models were processing about 22 billion API tokens every minute.
Google Search remains one of the most widely used internet services in the world, and YouTube gives Alphabet another massive global platform. What I find particularly important is that Alphabet has been integrating AI directly into Search rather than treating AI as a completely separate product. In the second quarter of 2026, Google Search and other revenue reached $63.3 billion, up about 17% from $54.2 billion a year earlier.
Android also gives Google a huge presence in smartphones around the world. I would not focus too heavily on one global market share percentage because the figure changes by month, country and measurement method. The bigger point for me is that Android remains the dominant mobile operating system globally by device usage, while Apple's iOS has a much stronger position in some valuable markets such as the United States.
Advertising is still extremely important to Alphabet, but I no longer view the company as being almost completely dependent on advertising. In the second quarter of 2026, Alphabet generated $119.8 billion in total revenue. Google advertising contributed $81.6 billion, which was about 68% of total revenue. Google Cloud contributed another $24.8 billion, while subscriptions, platforms and devices generated $12.9 billion.
The development of Google Cloud is one of the biggest changes I see in this comparison. Google Cloud revenue increased 82% in the second quarter of 2026, from $13.6 billion to $24.8 billion. Even more impressive to me is the improvement in profitability. Cloud operating income increased from $2.8 billion to $8.8 billion. Alphabet also reported a Cloud backlog of about $514 billion, showing just how much contracted demand has accumulated around cloud infrastructure and AI services.
Alphabet's advertising business itself is also still growing. Google advertising revenue increased from $71.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025 to $81.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026. YouTube advertising revenue increased from about $9.8 billion to $11.1 billion. This tells me that AI growth has not yet required Alphabet to sacrifice its established advertising engine.
Other Bets remains much smaller than Google's core operations. In the second quarter of 2026, Other Bets produced only $382 million in revenue and recorded an operating loss of about $1.8 billion. I therefore would not value Alphabet primarily on businesses such as Waymo today. I see them as potentially valuable long term options rather than the main reason Alphabet currently earns money.
On Apple's side, I like the transparency of its product categories. During fiscal 2025, the iPhone generated $209.6 billion, Mac generated $33.7 billion, iPad generated $28.0 billion, Wearables, Home and Accessories generated $35.7 billion and Services generated $109.2 billion. This breakdown makes it relatively easy for me to see which parts of the ecosystem are expanding and which ones are slowing.
I am also watching artificial intelligence closely because this is where the competitive picture has changed most dramatically. Alphabet is already generating substantial AI related demand through Google Cloud and Gemini, while Apple is trying to bring more AI capabilities directly into its enormous device ecosystem. Apple's fiscal third quarter 2026 results showed that its existing business remains strong even while this transition is taking place, with iPhone, Mac and Services all setting June quarter revenue records.

When I put the numbers side by side, I see a much closer contest than the old Apple versus Google comparison suggests. Apple gives me a highly profitable hardware and services ecosystem with $416.2 billion of fiscal 2025 revenue and more than $109 billion coming from Services. Its latest reported quarter also delivered $109.4 billion of revenue, 16% annual growth and $2.02 of diluted earnings per share.
Alphabet gives me a different growth story. Its second quarter 2026 revenue reached $119.8 billion, up 24%, while Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion. Search and other revenue grew 17%, YouTube advertising grew 13% and total Google advertising revenue reached $81.6 billion. At the same time, Alphabet is spending aggressively on AI infrastructure, with management expecting 2026 capital expenditure of roughly $175 billion to $185 billion.
My final verdict is that I would no longer choose Apple simply because Alphabet depends too heavily on advertising. That argument has become much weaker as Google Cloud and AI have expanded. If I were looking primarily for exposure to rapid cloud and AI growth, Alphabet would stand out to me. If I wanted a mature consumer ecosystem with exceptionally strong monetization, recurring Services revenue and a huge installed device base, Apple would stand out. Overall, based on the latest operating numbers, I would give Alphabet the edge for growth potential, while I would give Apple the edge for the strength and predictability of its consumer ecosystem. For me, the better stock at the end of the day depends on the valuation I have to pay, because even an outstanding company can become a poor investment when the share price already assumes years of exceptional growth.
