Amazon Global Market Share Guide

Amazon's Global Market Share

What Is Amazon's Market Share?

Amazon is a fairly large company, but to what extent? It is often said that it is dominant, or that it has a great scale, but what could that possibly mean? What is Amazon's actual scale? What is its global market share? While this may come across to any as an inane question, but with a company's size being a concern, it is important to be aware of what size is essentially being discussed.

Market share in theory is Amazon's (or any other corporation's) business divided by the size of the total market. Amazon tends to reveal its revenue country-by-country; its revenue in the US as of 2018 was recorded to be $160 billion.

Only 53 percent of Amazon's total revenue, however, is earned from direct ecommerce, and another 30 percent of the revenue comes from platform services, like AWS as well as third person product selling services (Marketplace). Yet another 10% of that revenue comes from Other sources, i.e., advertising, subscriptions (Amazon Prime), and brick-and-mortar stores, almost all of them being Wholefoods.

Amazon does not disclose all of its cuts, but according to evaluations, Whole Foods is nearly entirely found in the US. Excluding the stores, 66 percent of Amazon's revenue comes from the USA; hence it is wise to suppose that the same portion of ecommerce s also found in the USA, as a starting post.

At the same time, it can also be said that Prime, AWS, and/or advertising have a much bigger part of their business in the USA.

The above assumptions result in $81.5 billion US in ecommerce revenue, with a leeway to move it $5 billion up or even down.

Coming back to the third party revenue, Amazon allows other companies to add their own products on its site as well as deliver them via its warehouses as a part of its Marketplace business. Amazon charges those companies, and those fees are counted as revenue, i.e., $42.745 billion. However, Amazon does not consider the value of the acquisitions as its own takings, being complacent with US accounting regulations. This is because in these cases, Amazon acts as a mere go-between.

For instance, if someone were to buy an LED TV worth $1000 on Amazon through a third-party vendor, Amazon would charge the vendor (for instance) $150 for handling, shipping duties, and its commission. In this case, Amazon would count the $150 charged as third person service revenue and ignore the $1000 altogether.

Previously, Amazon preferred not to reveal its GMV (gross marketplace value, i.e., reporting the value of platform's own sells as a separate amount). In the 2018 shareholder letter, however, the company finally chose to reveal a slew of rounded figures, i.e., global sales (first-party) being $117 billion, and global third-party sales being $160 billion, totalling a global GMV $277 billion. This means that 58 percent of Amazon's global ecommerce comes from third parties making use of the platform to sell, and not Amazon itself. One thing of note is that the revenue Amazon gets from the third-person platform services happens to be nearly twice than that of AWS, and no doubt, profitable.

Amazon Statistics For Sellers

In the fast-growing era of ecommerce, how consumers shop online is constantly changing. As consumer behaviour constantly continues to change with the introduction of new technology, here is how consumers shopping on Amazon tend to make their purchasing decisions:

90 Percent Of Customers Check Prices On Amazon

Prevalent in almost half of the US ecommerce market, Amazon is noted to be among the first places consumers prefer to browse when looking to compare the prices of products. This is because Amazon is best recognized for its competitive prices, reliable customer care, and speedy shipping. Amazon is also filled to the brim with sellers selling similar products, so consumers are bound to find prices to compare.

If consumers, especially pre-existing Amazon prime subscribers, are able to find the products they are searching for on Amazon, it is most likely that they will make the purchase there than anywhere else.

2 Percent Echo Owners Purchasing Through Alexa

Since the product's release in the year 2015, more than a whopping fifty million Echos have been purchased by consumers worldwide. However, while Alexa, Echo's smart voice assistant, enables consumers to make purchases, check their order statuses, and get suggestions and recommendations on products via their voice, not a lot of consumers like to make purchases like this.

While the voice assistant is a helpful addition, simplifying shopping processes, consumers still prefer to see the products they are interested in before going ahead and buying them.

Amazon, On Average, Sells Over Twelve Million Products

Since it is Amazon's mission as an ecommerce platform to aid in customers discovering anything they would be interested in buying online, it is highly critical for it to sell as many kinds of products as possible, across several industries.

In its mission to offer all things to customers, the platform has created and developed an impressive catalogue consisting of more than twelve million products, media, book, and services.

Considering the platform's Marketplace sellers, the number of products is increased to more than three-fifty million products.

This may be ideal for Amazon, but it can be nerve-wracking for retailers because on a platform with a goal to constantly increase its product offerings, the competition between sellers always seems to be increasing as well.

Amazon Manages To Sell More Than 1.1 Million Bricolage Products

For a while, the home improvement industry was thought to not be overpowered by the Amazon Effect.

Sales in home improvement paraphernalia are a clear sign that more consumers are turning towards ecommerce, even in industries that were formerly thought to be predominated by physical stores.

Ninety-Five Million Amazon Prime Memberships

Towards the end of 2018, the memberships on Amazon Prime had totalled to an astonishing ninety-five million in just the US. This number makes up 59 percent of Amazon's US customers in total.

Amazon Prime Members Spend $1.4K, Annually

Earlier in 2018, Prime subscribers spent $1.4K (on average) on Amazon, compared to others not subscribed to Prime spending approximately $600. Prime subscribers turn out to be avid Amazon customers, ones that spend a lot of time shopping on the platform.

It has been observed that with a yearly fee of above $100, many Prime customers feel obligated to justify their costly subscription, hoping to get more out of their subscription to cope with the guilt they feel over having such an expensive subscription.

FBA Offers Sellers Increases In Sales

FBA, or Fulfilment by Amazon offers sellers 30 to 50 percent increase in sales. By joining FBA, sellers see an increase in the conversion rates of their SKUs (stock keeping units) as well as boosts in their sales.

A majority of this is associated with the Amazon Prime program. Users of Prime are offered two-day shipping on any Prime-associated products, attracting them to products having the Prime check mark. Shoppers, when they see products with the sign 'Shipped by Amazon' tend to gravitate towards purchasing them more.

Amazon Having Shipped Over Five Billion Products Globally

In 2017, Amazon shipped over a whopping five billion products globally. For sellers, the best thing about enrolling in FBA is that Amazon takes responsibility for the shipping, as well as the issues that arise with shipping.

Amazon has a huge number of warehouses nationwide, as well as a widespread network including logistic partner and delivery people. The platform has made every possible effort to offer its customers the fastest, most reliable shipping.

Amazon Gets More Than 50 Percent Of Its Revenue From Third-Person Sellers

More and more third-person sellers continue to rely on Amazon to sell their products without any chances of them slowing down. This is why above 50 percent of Amazon sales come from third-person sellers.

This is in Amazon's favour, since third-person sellers brought in more than 9.3 billion US Dollars in revenues in the first quarter of the year 2018 alone with the help of FBA and commissions.

An increasing number of sellers are now using the platform as direct-to-consumer businesses, rather than letting Amazon handle everything.

This has given sellers a great sense of ownership, however, they often end up struggling due to poor seller services as well as a lacking in client data, among other things.

A Majority Of Sellers Also Sell On Other Platforms

Amazon provides sellers the unmatched opportunity to reach out to a large number of audiences. Due to this, a lot of sellers are of the opinion that using Amazon's platform is important to help their businesses branch out and prosper.

That is not their only chance at branching out, however. Above 80 percent of sellers establish their businesses on other platforms as well, and those include their own websites.

The struggles third-person sellers face are the reason why they try not to have their businesses limited to Amazon, and reliant on it as well. The fact that they have to face competition 'not only from the sellers but Amazon itself' also leads them to feel obligated to be present on other platforms as well.

Amazon continuously launches more of its own brands, leaving third-person sellers concerned about the competition they might have to deal with, and ultimately leaving them no choice but to consider other platforms for their businesses as well.

Amazon Having Dominated The UK Ecommerce Market In 2019

According to reports from Edge by Ascential, international ecommerce insights company, Amazon happened to see an increase in its ecommerce revenue share in the UK from 28.8 percent in the year 2018 to 30.1 percent in 2019.

The report revealed that Amazon prevailed in UK ecommerce, due to $30 billion in sales in 2019.

Is It A Good Idea To Invest In Amazon?

An investment management company by the name of Saturna Capital Corporation happened to publish its fourth-quarter Sextant Mutual Funds Letter, 2020.

In their fourth-quarter Investor letter, the firm referred to Amazon.com, all the while revealing their insights on the platform. Amazon.com is a Washington-based ecommerce company with a market cap of $1.59 trillion. Since the start of 2021, the platform delivered a return of -2.95%, its annual gains going up by 64.74 percent. The stock closed at $3.161 per-share on the 1st of April, 2021.

Amazon has ranked first in Insider Monkey's list of the '30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds'. Towards the end of the fourth quarter in 2020, the platform appeared in 273 hedge fund portfolios, a step up from the third quarter where it appeared in 245 hedge fund portfolios. Amazon provided a -2.95 percent return in the previous three months.

Amazon delivered first-quarter earnings worth $15.79 per share, its revenue taking a leap 44 percent to $108.5 billion, all the while disproving estimates. The platform is set to gain a second-quarter revenue worth $110 to $116 billion, more than estimates showing $108.5 billion.

Amazon saw a lot of growth opportunities at the beginning of 2021. Those opportunities also included its plans to spread its virtual healthcare program all throughout the US. The platform also plans to expand its business in pharmaceutical drugs.

On the 17th of March, the platform announced the launch of Amazon care that would be offered to all of its US employees as well as their families in the summer. Oher firms are also to be included. The program initially launched its headquarters in Seattle over a year ago.

If Amazon is successful at delivering efficient healthcare services, that very potential is going to tremendously help grow its growth sector.

According to Amazon, the program allows employees to get in touch with certified healthcare professionals through video conferencing or chat. Amazon Care can also send a healthcare professional to a patient's home for assistance.
