Is Dogecoin a Good Investment

Is Dogecoin a Good Investment? The question is being asked by hundreds and thousands of investors seeking to make a fortune from the high volatility of cryptocurrencies lately. We will take a brief look at the ins and outs of Dogecoin to get a better understanding of whether to invest in the so-called fun crypto or to not risk capital.

Software engineers Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus created Dogecoin as a joke, a more fun version of Bitcoin, in 2013 to come up with a unique payment system that would be fast and free from the fees of traditional banking. Since then, the coin has traded with growth and currently it is at a record high price. On January 26, the market capitalization of Dogecoin was $5,382,875,000.

On February 22, over the period of the past seven days, the coin surged 107 percent to $10.5 billion. Today, one unit of Dogecoin is valued at 8.1 cents. On January 27, the value was just 0.007 cent.

The boost in value was mainly witnessed after tweets and supports of celebrities in recent months. Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted favorably saying it is the people's crypto. Earlier this month, he criticized large token holders, known as whales, for hoarding the crypto in large volume. He said the coin is currently becoming the currency of the internet.

Dogecoin Inflationary Design

Dogecoin has a different approach compared to that of Bitcoin with respect to economic or inflationary design. There is an infinite supply and miners are rewarded with 10,000 coins for the completion of each block. This means 14,400,000 coins are being mined on daily basis (60 minutes x 24 hours = 10,000 rewards).

As per the inflationary design, each lost Dogecoin is replaced with a new coin. There have been stories of owners losing coins by losing access to their wallets. In one case a man lost 7,002 Bitcoins after losing access to the related wallet.

The debate about inflationary vs deflationary designs is ongoing but it is worth noting here that an increase in circulation may not lead to inflation if the growth in value of goods and services is equal in an economy. Bitcoin follows a deflationary design.

Dogecoin initially focused on reaching the milestone of 100 billion coins as a stability point. However, the supply has surpassed the number and it is still growing. It is difficult to get a perfect balance between inflation and usage.

Dogecoin Mining

The blockchain of Dogecoin works similarly to other blockchains. The blocks are chained together and the process used is a hashing algorithm. This means miners can spend the coin by sending a transaction to a destination.

Miners running nodes get transactions and validate these transactions. Invalid transactions are rejected. Valid transactions find a way to the blockchain.

More to this, the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm is also used to capitalize on the work. Modern computers are capable of calculating a hash and it takes less than a second to compute a new hash. The new hash needs to match a specific pattern and this makes mining new blocks a bit difficult, as it is in the Bitcoin blockchain. If the difficulty is greater, the matching hashes would be fewer. Hence, a longer time is needed to generate a new matching hash. This process is referred to as PoW.

However, Dogecoin mining is faster than Bitcoin mining. Miners need 10 minutes to mine a new block on Bitcoin but the time taken for Dogecoin is just 1 minute.

Now, is Dogecoin a Good Investment?

Well, the information above seems positive and beginners may feel excited to start investing in Dogecoin at the earliest opportunity. It is also true the value has taken a giant leap in recent months. Analysts predict that the growth may continue this year and over a period of further years. Some critics have warned, however, rationalizing that Dogecoin is being speculated and its price may collapse anytime.

Is Dogecoin a Good Investment Verdict

Cryptocurrency investment is like gambling. It is highly volatile and predictions may turn out to be wrong. Hence, it is always suggested to invest just a small portion of one’s portfolio and even within the risk-taking capacity. Beginners are warned to invest with caution and to start with small capital. The advantage of starting with Dogecoin is that a unit of it costs very little, below one dollar. Moreover, it is currently considered one of the best altcoins in the industry.

In this article titled Is Dogecoin a Good Investment, we have discussed the ins and outs of the currency and attempted to examine the reasons for its speedy growth in recent months.
