The modern day is an era associated with technology and digital money. Yet most digital monetary transactions are still based on traditional monetary systems. Having said this, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin have changed the financial landscape with a new system called a blockchain. Blockchain technology-based currencies are not controlled by any central authority, instead based on a public ledger.
The origin of cryptocurrencies was seen around a decade ago with the birth of Bitcoin. Although it is still relatively young as an asset class, there is a plethora of opportunities for the sector to develop by penetrating into other merchant markets and attracting additional investors.
Today, there are well over 17,000 actively tracked cryptocurrencies, and many more will likely emerge. In this article, titled 'Dogecoin vs Bitcoin', I'll examine these two cryptos in an attempt to find out which is better when it comes to financial investment.
A perfect example of what was intended as a joke but then saw a serious wave of popularity is Dogecoin. It was created as an instant payment system, free from any kind of banking fees. The brains behind the platform were software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. The duo launched Dogecoin on 6th December 2013, and within a month of its launch, the website Dogecoin.com received more than a million visitors. About two weeks after launch, on 19th December 2013, Dogecoin's value jumped by around 300 percent within 72 hours, rising from $0.00026 to $0.00095. However, three days after that surge it saw its first major crash with a drop of around 80 percent.
On 25th December 2013, the crypto suffered its first major hacking scandal on the Dogewallet platform, with millions of coins stolen. It sparked several tweets and Dogecoin became the most talked about altcoin on social media. The SaveDogemas campaign was kick-started by its community in order to help victims by donating coins. About a month later the losses were regained.
Since the launch of the digital currency it has seen a giant leap in its value, up thousands of percent at its peak. On 28th January 2021, its market capitalisation soared to around $8 billion, briefly making it the ninth-largest cryptocurrency, after a Reddit-driven pump. It's worth noting that Dogecoin has never actually reached $1 in value: its all-time high was $0.7376, reached on 8th May 2021, the same day Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live.
Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency, was created in 2008 and launched for public use the following year. Each Bitcoin is created on a peer-to-peer network by users as a reward for mining. It can be exchanged for products, services, and other currencies. Crypto wallet adoption was still niche in Bitcoin's early years, with meaningful mainstream uptake only really taking off from 2017 onward as prices surged and public awareness grew.
During the 2020s coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, the value of Bitcoin jumped to a record high as financial markets crashed in most countries. Investors feared a repeat of the 2008 recession and began investing in perceived safe havens, such as gold and Bitcoin.
On 30th November 2020, it reached a record-high value of $19,860, surpassing its December 2017 all-time high. It went on to break through $40,000 for the first time on 8th January 2021, before pulling back and consolidating through much of the rest of that month, closing January around the $33,000 to $34,000 range.
MicroStrategy invested around $250 million in Bitcoin in August 2020 as a treasury reserve asset. Similarly, Square, Inc. injected about 1 percent of its total assets (roughly $50 million) in October 2020. Later, PayPal announced in November that its US users could buy, hold, or sell the currency from its platform.
On 10th December 2017, the Chicago Board Options Exchange facilitated the trading of Bitcoin futures. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange followed on 17th December 2017.
In 2011 the price of Bitcoin jumped from around $0.30 to $32. During the Cypriot financial crisis of 2012-13 its price further jumped to around $266 on 10th April 2013. However, it then soon crashed to around $50. On 29th November 2013, it reached a peak of $1,242. By late November 2020, Bitcoin's value had climbed into the $16,000-$17,000 range on its way to that year's record high.
