Fed raised its GDP growth forecast by more than 50% a few days ago. According to the new forecast, the Gross Domestic Product of the USA is expected to grow at a rate of 6.5% in 2021.
Unlike PBOC which expects the Chinese economy to keep growing at a 6% rate, the Federal Reserve expects the growth rate to cool down in later years. The current estimate is higher than the forecast of 4.2% made in December. A revised forecast shows that the US economy is recovering from the pandemic at a much faster pace than expected.
Economic indicators & employment rate shows signs of recovery but the adversely effected sectors remain week. Based on a statement released by the FEB, inflation will stay below 2%.
What's the driving force behind such a spectacular recovery in the USA economy? Low interest rates and injection of money into the economy. FED lowered the interest rate to near zero when the pandemic first started. This was followed by massive buying in bonds and securities by the FED. According to data, FED is buying $120 billion worth of securities and bonds every month. This cheap financing by the FED has kept the US economy afloat during the crisis.
A major reason for the good performance of the bond as well as the stock market is the FED's injection of money. Without easy financing, the stock market could have taken a more severe hit during the coronavirus pandemic. Timely intervention from the central bank saved the stock market and bond market.
Unprecedented actions of the FED and the stimulus checks from the government helped a lot of Americans. Many families in the US were in dire need of money after losing jobs during the pandemic. Stimulus checks from the government helped those people to make ends meet. Furthermore, the support of businesses from the Government also had a good impact on the GDP.
In short, the strategy to help the economy was a success. With GDP expected to make a rebound in 2021 and a strong stock market, signals a period of stability in the USA.
Following the news of the revised GDP forecast, stock markets rallied with Dow Jones (DJIA) gaining 150 points after the Fed's statement.
Looking ahead, the surge in coronavirus cases seems to be ending. Mass vaccination against the COVID-19 virus will further stop the alarming spread of Coronavirus in the USA. Congress is also sending a positive message by increasing the stimulus limit... The economy looks a lot stronger than where it was at the start of the year.
NFP (non-farm payrolls) reports from last months also show a recovering job market. With the job market recovering, consumer spending is also expected to improve over the coming months.
The manufacturing sector is also strong with experts forecasting further strength ahead.
Based on positive economic indicators, experts believe a more bullish GDP growth than the FED. According to forecasts from the private and public sectors, the USA may see GDP growth of 8% is expected in 2021.
Wells Fargo (a financial service company) also revised their GDP growth numbers. Based on the new forecast, Wells Fargo has revised their GDP growth to 6.8% in 2021.
Last year, 22 million Americans lost their job due to the pandemic-induced lockdown & restrictions. Based on current numbers, only 9 million unemployed are left. This shows a strong job recovery that was never seen before.
Goldman Sachs said that the USA economy has never added 11 million jobs in such a short span of time (5 months).
Fed is ready to allow inflation to even cross 2% as long as labor market conditions improved. Around 11 million jobs were added in few months but 9 million people are still unemployed. With US President Rescue Plan, $1.9 trillion in the stimulus is also expected which will further fuel economic activities.
In the coming months, rising inflation is expected due to fast-paced economic recovery.
Based on Fed's view, US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will grow 6% in 2021.
Analysts from the public and private sectors see a better outlook. According to these analysts, 2021 GDP growth is expected to be 8%.
A financial service company 'Wells Fargo' also holds a more bullish view. As compared to FED's 6% forecast, Wells Fargo sees a GDP growth of 6.8% in 2021.
If we combine the 3 forecasts from these 3 sources, average GDP growth of 6.93% could be seen in 2021.
A fast-growing economy can result in higher inflation. In this case, rising inflation can not be totally ruled out. Inflation is a double-edged sword. Both low and high inflation can be a problem for the economy.
The Economic Outlook Group also believes in the concerns of rising inflation in the USA. With GDP growth of 6% (forecast), an upward spiral in inflation could be seen.
In short, strong GDP growth is good along with recovering labor market... As long as the inflation worries are kept in check.
