eToro Copy Trading Guide

eToro Copy Trading

Trading has become a popular way to generate income on the Internet.

In this article we take a close look at the most popular social trading platform eToro

The strong point of eToro is its ability as a platform to create a kind of online trading community. It is the world's largest online trading network.

The premise of eToro is to gain enough recognition through trading activities to become a leader in the community.

The copy trader function allows registered eToro users to copy the trading strategies of successful trader accounts in the network. Copying is done in real-time and does not require a lot of effort.

What is Copy Trading?

Copy trading is a good solution for those who want to trade but lack the time or experience, and for those who want to improve their online trading skills.

Since 2010, approximately 124 million trades have been copied to eToro using the CopyTrader system, with an 80% success rate.

With copy trading your trading account is directly linked to the account of the trader you want to follow.

You can set the metrics you require for your copy trading activities and then the specified user trades are automatically assigned to your account.

With copy trading, you are free to determine how much capital you use. Entry levels, stop loss levels and exit levels are also copied (in principle) but this can be modified.

In addition, the trader has the option to disable the copy trading functionality and take over the management of the trades himself.

While the earliest versions of online trading platforms were just copies of traditional trading, eToro's social trading features are what really sets it apart from the other platforms in the market.

Social trading harnesses the wisdom of the masses for online trading, allowing traders to copy other traders using the CopyTrade system.

How does copy trade work?

With CopyTrader, you can view a trader's investments and copy their trades. The program allows novice traders to copy more experienced traders on the eToro trading network.

How CopyTrader works is simple: choose the trader (s), choose the amount to invest, and make a copy with just a click.

The Copytrader function, built into the platforms, allows an average user to copy the market behavior of another user - who preferably knows what they are doing with their investment capital.

There are therefore several choices available to you: you can be a leader, be a copier, or both! A leader shares his positions and receives financial bonuses based on the number of copies he has.

This formula, therefore, allows you to earn additional money, based on your strategies and your thoughtful decisions in the markets.

This is a very enviable position, as this will provide you more visibility and thus allows you to gain new copiers - for even better profits.

In contrast, a copier follows an example, and can directly copy the positions of a leader.

You can copy up to 100 traders! So you can start making profits even without understanding the complexities of the stock market.

In hindsight, you can look back on the decision-making of professional traders and appreciate their analysis, which often is a very good way to get started on your own, by following the example of other successful traderss. You might even become a role model yourself.

There is no better teacher than those whose profession it is, and no better way to learn than by making money.

What is Mirror Trading?

Mirror Trading is the first form of copy trading to occur on the broker's trading platform.

With mirror trading, a trader can view the characteristics and results of the various strategies available on the platform.

The trader chooses his profit goals, trading style, level of capital tolerance and risk tolerance, and a strategy another user wants to take on.

It basically reflects all the actions that are based on this strategy in trading. These deals are automatically copied and assigned to your own account.

Mirror trading allows those without the experience or knowledge to navigate the workings of the stock or forex market to trade without studying fundamental or technical analysis.

On the other hand, copy trading is similar to computerized trading, except that it relies on a human algorithm, the intuition and knowledge of more experienced traders are what shows others the way.

In fact, mimicry has always been a reality in the world of finance, as investors generally follow the recommendations of major analysts.

In a complex and uncertain environment, trusting others is therefore a completely rational strategy, all the more so if one is not experienced, if one does not have time to be informed or if you don't want to let your stress and emotions affect your portfolio.

What are CopyPortfolios?

Instead of being forced to explore thousands of possibilities to select which traders and investment strategies to copy, traders can use CopyPortfolios to simplify and speed up the process by choosing from a selection of portfolios that bring together a selection of best traders, investments, positions, and strategies.

There are two types of CopyPortfolios: Top Trader CopyPortfolios and Market CopyPortfolios.

How do CopyPortfolios work?

To access the CopyPorfolio functionality, simply click on the “CopyPortfolios” button located on the horizontal navigation bar.

A page with a list of Market Portfolios and Top Trader Portfolios will appear.

Click on your chosen portfolio to bring up a page with all the details of the portfolio. Then, you will have to click on the “Invest” button located at the top left.

Here you can set the amount you are going to allocate to the fund and the ratio or amount of Copy Stop Loss.

To execute the investment, just click on the 'Invest' button.

The Top Trader CopyPortfolio

Top Trader CopyPortfolios are selections made according to eToro's own criteria. They aim to give an equal weighting of investments to a selection of the best performing and most active eToro traders.

Top Trader CopyPortfolios are managed and rebalanced by a machine learning engine and operate under the supervision of eToro's investment committee.

In this category, there are also two types of Top Trader CopyPortfolio.

The first Top Trader CopyPortfolio is the GainsQTR which is a selection of 50 traders on which the eToro algorithm provides the greatest chance to generate a positive trading performance during the next quarter.

The second Top Trader CopyPortfolio is called ActiveTraders which is a selection of traders identified by the eToro algorithm as having received positive results and most likely to achieve the best risk /reward ratio in the following quarter.

The Market CopyPortfolio

This tool is significantly different from the Top Trader CopyPortfolio. Market portfolios are based on a specific position in a market sector.

Just as banks and pension funds etc. offer investment products in market sectors, eToro now offers the same service.

eToro currently offers two Market CopyPortfolio.

How to choose the trader to copy?

Firstly, do not rush your choice by imagining that it is final or unique; you can copy up to 100 traders at a time, and decide to stop whenever you want so do not hesitate to test the different profiles, over several weeks or even several months.

One of the benefits of Social Trading is that you can chat with individuals at anytime.

In particular, if you are studying the activity of a trader, you may well ask for an explanation of his latest actions in the markets - the profiles are public, and all actions are visible. Ask for their opinion but make up your own mind.

That is all well and good, but how do you know if traders are really profitable to follow?

It's simple, each trader has a percentage of earnings linked to their account - calculated by making the difference between their total profits and their investment capital - which allows them to establish a ranking, which is updated on a regular basis.

Refer to this ranking over several weeks to get an idea of the most present and most successful traders.

eToro Copy Trading Conclusion

As we have seen, the Copy trading features offered by eToro are very attractive.

Instead of constantly reading the news, trying to draw conclusions, and spending a lot of time on technical analysis of price movements, you are simply copying top performing traders.

Your task is therefore limited to identifying successful traders and then copying their equity portfolios or investment strategies.
